The first act of injustice against the black community began many years ago when transatlantic slavery began.
The black community has lived through more than 50 years of exclusion, discrimination, marginalization, and societal barriers that seem to be permanently embedded into Canadian Society.
4 groups in Canadian Society have been identified as being exposed to the most discrimination, and those groups are the LGBTQ community, the First Nations People, the Jewish community, and the Black community.
Before the Canadian Human Rights Act was amended in 1996, members of the LGBTQ community were subjected to facing up to 2 years of imprisonment if they were found to be in a consensual relationship with a partner of the same sex.
In 2009, laws were implemented to protect members of the Jewish community from antisemitism.
The First Nations People were previously denied full protection through the Canadian Human Rights Acts; however, laws have been changed since then which gives our First Nations People full protection today.
The Black Community has experienced slavery in Canada, discrimination, marginalization, exclusion and excessive punishment from the Canadian criminal justice system.
Out of the 4 identified marginalized groups, laws have never been made to acknowledge the Injustice that the Canadian Black Community has endured for more than 50 years in Canada.
There are no anti-hate black laws that specifically target protection for Canadian-based black people from the continuance of discrimination in Canada.
Black people continue to face discrimination in stores, banks, and restaurants and face many barriers to living in Canada free from stigmatic beliefs.
Canada has never created laws to identify the anguish faced by our community the way other marginalized groups have.
The Black Community is petioning the policymakers in Ontario to acknowledge the wrongs that have, been and continue to be executed by Canadian Society.
We've started this petition to stand together as one to demand amendments to the laws, the criminal codes of Canada, and the Canadian Human Rights Act to acknowledge the years of exclusion we face as a people in Canada.
Although there are statistics gathered by Statistics Canada that confirm that the Canadian Black Community faces the most dehumanization in this society, laws have yet to be made to protect our community by recognizing the distinction between the value placed on our community compared to other communities in Canada.
Please sign this petition to demonstrate to policymakers that black people have a right to dwell in Canada free from systemic racism which has been embedded into Canadian Society since the transatlantic slave trade began many years ago.
